How to Identify a Flea Infestation

How to get rid of fleas with Ja-Roy Pest Control in Southern LouisianaThe first sign of a flea infestation is usually bites. Your pet may scratch, bite, or lick itself more frequently than usual, and you might detect raised scabs beneath its fur. Be aware that fleas will also bite humans, so watch for bites on yourself and your family members.

Although tiny, the fleas themselves are visible to the naked eye. They are dark in color and famous for their impressive jumping ability. To find them, check your pet’s fur — especially by combing through it — or inspect bedding and carpeting in your pet’s favorite resting areas.

Where Do Fleas Come From?

You know your pets bring in fleas, but where exactly are they coming from? Often, the source is your own yard.

Flea problems can be tough to eradicate because even after treating your pet, they can quickly pick up more outside. That’s why professional flea control is a smart investment — we help you eliminate fleas right in your yard.

In some cases, flea infestations can also appear as secondary issues following intrusions by rodents, birds, or other wildlife onto your property.

FAQs on Flea Control Service

No two flea infestations are the same. Our flea removal team will work to come up with a custom approach to get rid of your flea problem for good.

To ensure the most successful outcome for your flea treatment, a few preparatory steps are necessary. If you are scheduled for interior service, please note that your technician cannot perform the treatment unless these required steps are completed prior to the scheduled time.

Before interior flea treatment:

  • Vacuum your flooring thoroughly. Apply extra care to areas where pets sleep or rest. Vacuum any furniture that pets are allowed on. Make sure to do so between and under cushions.
  • Clean (or destroy) infested pet bedding.
  • When you’re done vacuuming, dispose of the bag and/or its contents in an outside trash receptacle. If you don’t do this, you run the risk of more fleas hatching and emerging.
  • In any rooms where pets spend time, clear up boxes or any other items that could prevent access.
  • Find somewhere else to go while treatment is taking place. Pets and birds must also leave. Fish can remain if tanks or bowls are properly covered and the air compressor is unplugged.

After interior flea treatment:

  • Wait until the treatment has dried before resuming normal activities.
  • Keep babies and their toys off floors for at least 24 hours after the treatment is dry. Otherwise, you can resume all normal activities once the treatment has dried.
  • Do not steam clean your carpet or mop your floors for about one week. The treatment needs this time to be effective, allowing fleas to hatch from egg to larva or develop from pupa to adulthood.
  • It is normal to see some adult fleas after treatment. This is a sign that the treatment is working. Vacuum any adult fleas you find.
  • Fleas found on your pet do not automatically indicate an indoor flea problem. Consult your veterinarian for appropriate pet treatment.
