How Do bed Bugs Spread?

Bed bugs can spread through your property easier than you may think. Infestations typically begin when these pests latch on purses, suitcases, backpacks, and other items and hitch a ride to a new location.

There are three scenarios that are most likely to contribute to a bed bug infestation:

  • Infested college students returning home
  • Traveling with an infested suitcase or staying in an infested hotel
  • Bringing infested furniture into the home

Can Bed Bugs Fly or Jump?

Bed bugs do not have wings, so they cannot fly. In addition, they cannot jump long distances, unlike some bugs their size (like fleas). So how do bed bugs move? Through crawling! Bed bugs actually crawl quite slowly. Due to their tendency to hide near where they feed, they don’t have to move quickly. Once they’ve fed, they’ll crawl back into hiding until they emerge again. Occasionally, you can see the bugs crawling on walls.

Do Bed Bugs Spread Quickly in Louisiana?

As mentioned previously, bed bugs are slow movers and are incapable of flying or jumping long distances. When bed bugs spread quickly, it’s often because they’ve hitched a ride somehow. Bed bugs most commonly latch onto purses, suitcases, backpacks, or luggage. From there, they can easily transport from one spot to another. This is why bed bug infestations frequently are tied back to travel, and why it’s important to stay vigilant when traveling to avoid bringing them home with you. Bed bugs may be somewhat slow crawlers, but they’re expert hiders and can move from room to room in your home before you ever notice their presence.

Can I Get Bed Bugs From Someone With an Infestation?

Although bed bugs commonly spread from latching onto suitcases or purses, they are not contagious in the sense that they pass from person to person. Bed bugs do not like heat, and thus do not live on humans and transmit to other people that way. Although they aren’t directly contagious, it is very common for bed bugs to spread from one home to a neighboring home or public building by being hitchhikers.
