Does Baking Soda Kill Bed Bugs?

Baking soda has been rumored to kill bed bugs, however, there is no scientific evidence that baking soda works to eliminate bed bugs. Baking soda is said to dehydrate bed bugs, and while this may be a temporary solution, it’s rarely effective enough to get rid of an entire infestation.

That said, many people will try to use baking soda to get rid of these parasitic bugs.

The treatment supposedly works in the following ways:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda around areas that bed bugs typically inhabit, such as the mattress, headboard, and the area around your bed.
  2. A few days later, vacuum it up and repeat the process.
  3. Although this may work occasionally, it is not guaranteed to get rid of bed bugs entirely.

How Are Bed Bugs Affected By Baking Soda?

As mentioned above, there is no proof that the use of baking soda is an effective method in eliminating bed bugs. Baking soda breaks down when it comes into contact with water, and is said to absorb the thick fluids found on a bed bug’s shell, causing them to dehydrate. Small particles of baking soda supposedly cut into the shell of a bed bug and cause internal bleeding. Although this solution may kill a few bed bugs, it will not eliminate a full-blown infestation.

Natural Remedies for Bed Bugs

When searching the internet, you will find several home remedies to eliminate bed bugs, but which ones actually work? Most natural solutions have varying degrees of success in killing a few bed bugs, but can’t eliminate an entire infestation. Some of these include talcum powder, mothballs, rubbing alcohol, tea tree oil, diatomaceous earth, and even ultrasonic devices. At the end of the day, natural remedies do not offer a permanent solution for a bed bug problem.

Why Baking Soda Can't Eliminate Bed Bugs

Although the above methods may be successful in killing a few bed bugs, you’re not out of the woods just yet. Without professional bed bug treatment, it can be extremely hard to eliminate bed bugs from your home. The last thing you want is lingering bed bugs, which is why it’s recommended to use a pest control company to handle the infestation quickly and efficiently.
