A mosquito on a hand

Once the weather starts to warm up again in spring, mosquitoes come out in full force. Pestering and biting us at all of our outdoor events for months, it seems they never slow down until the warmth retreats into winter again. You may have wondered, how long do mosquitoes live for? The answer is surprisingly complicated. Read on to learn all about the mosquito life cycle with the experts at Ja-Roy!

How Long Do Mosquitoes Live For?

The lifespan of a mosquito changes depending on environmental and biological circumstances. For starters, the difference in lifespan between male and female mosquitoes is staggering. Both males and females start with a two-week span of hatching from their egg to developing into an adult. After this, males are met with a much harsher fate. Males only live about 10 days into adulthood on average, while females usually live anywhere from 1-2 months, reproducing and propagating their species.

If temperatures drop below an average of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, mosquitoes will start to die. However, in rare cases, some mosquitoes have been found hibernating in warm enough hiding places! Female mosquitoes will even lay their eggs in near-freezing water so that the eggs hatch months later when it’s warm.

The Rapid Lifecycle of a Mosquito

The mosquito life cycle starts with a female laying her eggs in standing water. If these fragile eggs are given the chance to hatch without disruptions or predation, they will enter their larval stage, feeding on algae, bacteria, protozoa, and other organic material in the water. An inactive pupal stage follows this, in which the mosquito develops its wings and legs. After fully forming, the mosquito dries off at the surface and takes to the skies to continue their cycle. It only takes two weeks for mosquitoes to reach adulthood after hatching!
